AnnotationDeclining informal care amongst families is being experienced in Kerala caused by changes in family composition and economic and community life affecting the extant kin, leaving neighbours and friends support the elderly population. Religious communities and relatives also form part of an informal care system in Kerala, because of the strong community relationships that already exist. However, this cannot substitute for the lack of attention from the nearest family members, which then gives rise to a feeling of negligence and avoidance in the older person being cared for; and this is especially true in the case of those who are physically ill and/or dependent. Using the data collected from a representative sample from Ernakulam and Kozhikode districts of Kerala state, an analysis across various aspects of informal care systems is made in this paper. The state and voluntary sectors should be sensitised to improve the informal care system rather than the public support systems. (KJ/RH).
