Annotation | The government has promised to outlaw age discrimination in employment by October 2006. This report focuses on the implications for older people, not only in relation to employment but also in respect of public services and medical care. It contends that the government's proposals are complex, weak, and limited to the minimum required by the EU Directive. It therefore sets out a programme for reform, suggesting either legislation or regulation. It makes recommendations on the goal of public policy on age discrimination in relation to older people; and on age discrimination in employment and training, and by public and private providers of goods and services. The proposed Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) should have a responsibility to promote good practice on age equality in all these areas. (RH). |
