Annotation | A proactive strategy for the ageing population was first proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2002. Chinese authorities and experts in gerontology welcome the strategy, and they have already emphasized the need to safeguard the dignity of the older population and use their talents. There currently exists a shortage of expertise concerning the positive engagement of older people and more intervention may be required. China's gerontologists therefore advocate new socioeconomic ideals for the elderly community, proposing greater protection of their human rights. (KJ/RH). |
