Annotation | Susanne Zank and Claudia Schacke (Journals of Gerontology, vol 57B, no 4, 2002) make a valuable contribution to demonstrating that adult day care can improve clients' functioning. At the same time, they draw conclusions about the lack of benefit to family caregivers and refer to limitations in the study. Zank and Schacke claim to have used the six criteria developed by Zarit and colleagues, who contend that four of the criteria varied considerably and that these differences may account for the null findings. This commentary examines those four criteria. Criterion 1: Use of services on a regular basis for a sustained period of time. Criterion 2: Use of a control group not receiving treatment. Criterion 3: The two groups had no significant intervention before treatment. Criterion 4: Use of a theory-driven model for evaluating outcome. These and other differences lead Zarit and colleagues to conclude that Zank and Schacke did not adequately test their hypotheses about the effects of adult day care on family caregivers. (RH). |
