Annotation | The ability of the Zarit Scale (ZS, usually known as the Zarit Burden Interview, ZBI) to identify signs of caregiver collapse in people looking after patients suffering from dementia was analysed. In this study in Spain of 66 patients with dementia and their caregivers, a translation of the ZS approved for Spanish speakers was used. The following risk factors associated with the patient were evaluated: age, sex, type of dementia, place of residence, length of illness, behavioural disorders, incontinence, Barthel Index, Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), Folstein's Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the use of day-care centres. Risk factors associated with the caregiver evaluated were age, sex, relationship with patient, help received with caring, the patient's illness, other family responsibilities, and other work outside the home. There was a large degree of agreement between the ZS and a semi-structured interview that was also used. The ZS was found to be useful not only in identifying caregiver burden and evaluating risk factors, but also in predicting main caregiver collapse, the main causes for which are behavioural disorders and not living with the patient.
