Annotation | The palliative care movement began in Great Britain and spread quickly, not only to the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand but also to continental Europe. This article provides an overview of material covered in a new book entitled "Medicine and care of the dying: a modern history" (Lewis; OUP, New York, 2007). Historically, concern about palliative care has developed separately from that about better care for the chronically ill; but the same demographic and other forces are now shaping the context in which more patient-centred services are needed. Palliative care and care for the chronically ill should be better integrated, as should health services generally. (KJ/RH). |
