Consenting adults — assessing mental capacity | Author(s) | Premila Fade |
Journal title | Geriatric Medicine, vol 37, no 10, October 2007 |
Pages | pp 15-22 |
Keywords | Cognitive impairment ; Dementia ; Rights [elderly] ; Assessment procedures for mental patients. |
Annotation | The concept of informed consent is based on an individual's basic human right to make their own decisions and pursue their own goals. However, a diagnosis of dementia or other form of cognitive impairment can jeopardise a patient's ability to give informed consent. Dr Fade, a consultant geriatrician for the Poole Hospital NHS Trust, looks at how mental capacity should be assessed and how patients who lack capacity should be managed. This entails an explanation of 'making a best interests decision'. Two case studies are given. (KJ/RH). |
