Annotation | Journeying to the Sacred Mosque in Mecca (undertaking the Hajj which means "a great journey") is one of the defining moments of Muslim life. Many only find the means and opportunity to do so in their latter years. The authors consider some of the spiritual, social and physical benefits of the pilgrimage to Mecca and review the potential risks healthcare professionals need to be aware of as many can be mitigated with appropriate preparation; these can include heat stroke and dehydration, and infectious diseases. A pre-Hajj consultation with a healthcare professional is advised. (KJ/RH). |
