AnnotationThe authors outline ways in which care homes can help families to become partners in the caring process: they refer to Mike Nolan and colleagues' Senses Framework, a model for relationship-centred care. Using case examples, quotations, research-based evidence and checklists, they offer practical advice and good practice guidelines to families who choose to be involved in the care of relatives with dementia in care homes, from admission to end-of-life care concerns. The book includes two studies. The first, on the experiences of family members following admission to a care home, was conducted in North Wales. The second, a European study, compared the perspectives of family members and care home staff and their perceptions of each other in Sweden, Spain, Ireland and the UK. The concluding chapter makes recommendations on handling the transition and admission to care homes, and discusses challenges in relation to three main areas of relatives' involvement: advocacy, ensuring personalised care, and monitoring care.
