AnnotationThe Older People's Programme (OPP) undertook this 'Learning from Experience' Research project for the UK Inquiry into Mental Health and Wellbeing in Later Life (MHILLI) between March and October 2006. An action research approach was adopted, to ensure that the voices of older people with knowledge and experience of mental health issues and carers were represented. This document reports on the methodology for a scoping study of 100 items, and the results of fieldwork with 178 people aged 50+, including 28 attending a mental health service and 48 carers. The study was designed to answer three key questions: what do older people and their carers say about their mental health; in particular, what do older people and carers say about what really helps their mental health; and how have services and agencies responded on the basis of what older people and carers have told them? 72 of the 100 items were reviewed and analysed in detail to answer these questions. Five cross cutting themes are identified: stigma and stereotypes; distance and dislocation; accessibility and flexibility; power and control; and disregarded and overlooked needs. The conclusion identifies six priority areas for the Inquiry's attention: meaningful engagement and involvement with influence; a high profile publicity and media campaign; greater recognition for and access to independent advocacy and support; greater focus on self-directed support for older people with mental health needs; access to and opportunities for different kinds of support and services; and an environment where research knowledge, best practice and developments are shared, disseminated and implemented. The project team's "learning for experience" theme highlights the value of engaging older people (and others) about later life mental health issues. (RH).
