AnnotationThe contribution of social network type to older Israelis' survival or mortality risk was examined. The authors performed secondary analysis of all-cause mortality in Israel using data from a 1997 national survey of 5055 people aged 60+ that was linked to records from the National Death Registry updated to 2004. Six network types were considered in the analysis - diverse, friend focused, neighbour focused, family focused, community-clan, and restricted - controlling for population group, sociodemographic background, and health factors. Cox proportional hazards regressions were carried out for the entire sample, and separately for each age group at baseline: 60-69, 70-79, and 80+. Network types were associated with mortality in the 70-79 and 80+ age groups. Respondents located in diverse and friend-focused network types, and to a lesser degree those in community-clan network types, had a lower risk of mortality compared to those belonging to restricted networks. The parameters used to derive network types in this study can serve in developing practical network inventories, while gerontologists and other practitioners should tailor interventions in line with the different network types.
