AnnotationThis study used an exploratory, cross-sectional design to examine participants' health and mental health beliefs and attitudes, as well as pursuing and accessing care for health and mental health problems. Data was collected in two phases. The first phase was conducted in Morelia, Mexico in the state of Michoacan, during summer 2000, and examined the health perceptions and behaviours of elders. The second phase examined these same factors with Mexican immigrants in Portland, Oregon, during 2000 and 2005. The Mexican and Oregon samples consisted of 11 participants each (n=22) aged 60+. The Mexican age range was 69-81 and the Oregon sample's range was 63-78. Both groups' responses were compared in order to gain insight into how western culture and medical pluralism influence the health beliefs and behaviours of Mexican and Mexican-American individuals. The results were extracted from descriptive analyses of quantitative data, which suggested that participants from both samples perceived themselves as relatively healthy and functional, despite suffering pain and various illnesses. Data on attributes such as health characteristics and religious beliefs are discussed, and implications for social work are drawn. This research was presented at the 27th Annual Meeting and Educational Leadership conference for the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education in San Jose, California, and Baccalaureate Program Directors' Conference, Reno, Nevada, October 2003.
