AnnotationBy 2025, about one-third of Europe's population will be aged 50+, with a particularly rapid increase in the number aged 80+. Promoting good health and active social participation among older people will be crucial in strategies to meet this challenge. The 3-year Healthy Ageing Project (2004-2007) has been co-funded by the European Commission with these aims in mind, also to exchange knowledge and experience among the European Union Member States and EFTA-EEA countries. The Project involves ten countries, the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union Older People's Platform (AGE) and EuroHealthNet. UK project partners have included the Health Development Agency (until July 2005), Middlesex University (from October 2005), and NHS Health Scotland. This short version of the Project's main report suggests recommendations to decision makers, non-government organisations (NGOs) and practitioners on how to promote healthy ageing. Examples of themes from its Healthy Ageing framework include retirement and pre-retirement, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, injury prevention, use of medication, and preventive health services.
