AnnotationGreater longevity is an indicator of human progress in general. At the same time, major changes in the population structure worldwide are being brought about by increased life expectancy and lower fertility rates. This 2007 edition of the World economic and social survey analyses the challenges and opportunities associated with ageing populations, in furtherance of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing adopted at the Second World Assembly on Ageing on 12 April 2002. The survey uses statistical tables, graphs and charts to illustrate and examine the demographics of an ageing world population; older people's living arrangements, roles and participation in a changing society; the economic and social consequences of population ageing; income security in old age through pension systems; and health and long-term care. Attention is drawn to concepts such as 'ageing in place' and the provision of home-based health care. The survey argues that the challenges of ageing are not insurmountable, but that societies everywhere need to put in place the policies required to confront these challenges effectively, and to ensure an adequate standard of living while also recognising the contribution and participation of all.
