Annotation | Since the tragic events of 11 September 2001, faith has become an important discourse in society as a whole. This article explores aspects of that discourse in our multi-cultural society with special reference to mental health and well-being. It describes a conference set up by the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMHE), Staffordshire University and the National Forum on Spirituality and Mental Health to explore how belief systems can affect people's well-being and their recovery from mental illness. Philomena Harrison's commentary notes how Peter Gilbert's article underlines the need for social and mental health services to recognise spirituality as part of the 'whole person'. To do this effectively in our multi-cultural, multi-faith society will require sensitivity to the needs of black and minority ethnic (BME) communities and the dismantling of stereotypes. (KJ/RH). |
