Annotation | The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee sought evidence on the biological processes of ageing, and the application of research in technology and design to improve older people's quality of life. The Committee's report considers demographic change and why and how ageing occurs, which in turn leads to consideration of the ageing process, degeneration of the human body and mind over time, and diseases prevalent in old age. A chapter on environmental challenges and assistive technology notes industries' failure to exploit opportunities for this market. The management by Government of health in old age - both individual and for society as a whole - is examined. Lastly, the Committee comments on the strategic direction and co-ordination of ageing research. The Committee's conclusions and recommendations relate to all the above, also consideration on: nutrition, the built environment, transport, communication, the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF), cost effectiveness, clinical record, clinical trials, and the funding of research. Appendices include notes of a seminar in September 2004 hosted by the Academy of Medical Sciences, chaired by Thomas Kirkwood, the Committee's specialist adviser. (RH). |
