Annotation | This follow-up report includes the Government's lengthy and detailed response to the Science and Technology Committee's original report, "Ageing: scientific aspects". The Committee has taken the unusual step of sending the response to some of the original witnesses and to Professor Thomas Kirkwood (the Committee's Specialist Adviser) for their views (included as written evidence). They share the Committee's disappointment that its recommendations have almost without exception been rejected. A commentary on the Government response refers to a few areas where the response "has conspicuously failed to engage": healthy life expectancy, stroke, winter mortality, and co-ordination of research.
