AnnotationIn November 2002, the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services publicly reported on the quality of nursing homes on the Nursing Home Compare (NHC) web site. This study examines administrators' opinions of this initiative and whether it has fostered quality improvement. Data is from a postal questionnaire to administrators at 477 nursing homes in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Tennessee; 324 responded (68%). 90% of the administrators examined the NHC website. 51% stated they would be using the information for quality improvement in the future, and 33% stated they were using NHC in quality improvement initiatives. For NHC to influence quality as it is intended, nursing home quality of care initiatives are essential. (RH).
