Annotation | Grandparents raising grandchildren often receive less support than other foster carers, even though their needs may be greater. This report explores the experiences and needs of grandparents when raising their grandchildren as a result of substance misuse. It looks at: children and their needs; the impact on the lives of grandparents and the family; and the needs of grandparents when they take care of their grandchildren. It is based on a literature review prepared by Christine Hogg, and a consultation with grandparents raising grandchildren as a result of drug/and or alcohol misuse. Examples of good practice indicate the availability of some local and national counselling, support groups or respite care in helping with problems such as stress, social isolation and financial costs.
