AnnotationIn August 2001, the Department of Health (DH) wrote to higher education institutions (HEIs) and Workforce Development Confederations (WDCs) in England inviting joint applications for funding to support "common learning programmes" for pre-registration students. Representatives from the four pilots selected report on their programmes. First, "Towards a common goal: developing practice-based interprofessional education in North East England" involved the Universities of Newcastle, Northumbria and Teesside collaborating with a "partnership site" for two former WDCs (Northern England and County Durham and Tees Valley). The partnership enabled the inclusion of students from pre-registration education programmes in nursing, medicine and allied health and social care professions. Second, King's College London, and London South Bank and Greenwich Universities were the partners for "Interprofessional learning in south east London". The starting point for this project had been sessions on communication, and infection control and hand washing. Third, "Interprofessional learning in practice in South Yorkshire" was a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, known as the Combined Universities Interprofessional Learning Unit (CUILU). Its aim was to embed an emerging practice-based interprofessional learning pedagogy into curricula for students of health and social care across both universities. Lastly, "Embedded interprofessional learning in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight: the New Generation Project" involved a partnership between the University of Southampton and the University of Portsmouth and health and social care providers. Each case study describes the development of each programme and lessons learned. (RH).
