Annotation | The authors argue that the third age exists as both a social and a cultural phenomenon. They explain that cohort was selected because of the importance of time in the social nature of later life, while community is the focus through which most cultural and social identities are realised. They use a wide range of Western European and North American sources to examine the history of welfare states, the emergence of consumer society, the growth of individualisation, the reconstitution of identity and community, and cohorts and the study of social change. Some of the material in this book has been presented at conferences since 2002. (RH). |
