Annotation | The Disconnected Mind project stems from a chance discovery in an Edinburgh basement of data from the Mental Health Survey of all Scottish children aged 11 and conducted by the Scottish Council for Research in Education (SCRE) in 1947. Funded by Help the Aged, the project sought participants from the 1947 survey. Researchers Ian Deary (University of Edinburgh) and Laurence Whaley (University of Aberdeen) have been compiling findings on the role of diet, exercise, lifestyle and genetics on mental abilities as we age. The aim is to find an evidence base for preventive strategies against cognitive impairment, also on our understanding of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This article outlines the project and of a meeting in Edinburgh attended by some 700 of the survey and project participants. (RH). |
