Annotation | Support for carers in general has been given priority in England and Wales through Carers' Strategy documents. In this article, the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) analyses some findings regarding carers of people with dementia. In "Carers chronicles: the way it is and signposts for the future" (2007), Outside the Box Development Support describes a project run by NHS Tayside and local authorities, in which carers kept diaries of their contact with services. Articles in gerontology periodical titles are also suggested. From Aging and Mental Health (vol 11, no 3, May 2007), "Emotional impact of dementia diagnosis: exploring persons with dementia and caregivers' perspectives",Faranak Aminzadeh et al noted the need for better understanding of the experience of people with dementia at diagnosis disclosure. Two articles in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry (vol 21, no, January 2006) are suggested: "Dementia patients caregivers quality of life: the pilot study", by Philippe Thomas (vol 21, no 1, January 2006); and "The relative stress scale: a useful instrument to identify various aspects of carer burden in dementia?" by Ingun Ulstein et al ((vol 22, no 1, January 2007). SCIE notes that such research and evidence suggests that carers of people with dementia who experience psychological distress should be offered psychological therapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). However, more research on the cost-effectiveness of these therapies for health and social care services is required. (RH). |
