AnnotationThere is clear evidence that early diagnosis and intervention improves outcomes for service users and unpaid carers. However, many people with dementia never receive a diagnosis. This report presents some stark facts and figures on dementia, and finds that attitudes and awareness of people with dementia, family carers and general practitioners (GPs) are barriers to diagnosis. Dementia thus presents a significant and urgent challenge to health and social care. The report examines the Department of Health's roles and responsibilities in the light of the Alzheimer's Society's Dementia UK report (2007). While the evidence points to disjointed and often ineffective management of community care following diagnosis, there are opportunities to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of the system's response to dementia. Case examples illustrate instances of good practice. The report refers to a whole system case study in Lincolnshire on identifying alternatives to hospital for people with dementia, led by consultants the Balance of Care Group, findings of which are covered in an appendix. Other appendices include: outlines of the main elements of the methodology and of scientific research; key publications on dementia (since 2000); international comparative data compiled by the Personal and Social Services Unit (PSSRU) at LSE; focus group recommendations and priorities; and GP knowledge quiz results.
