Annotation | Compared with other types of prejudice, ageism is under-researched and there has been no previous systematic national survey of age-related prejudice such as that portrayed in the PaddyPower betting shop chain's 2004 advertisement showing two women crossing the road. Age Concern England (ACE) developed a comprehensive research programme in partnership with the University of Kent, and commissioned TNS (Taylor Nelson Sofres) to conduct a nationally representative sample survey among 1843 people aged 16+ in Great Britain. This short report discusses the main findings on perceptions of old age and ageism, how we perceive an ageing society, whether ageism is getting worse and more prevalent than other forms of discrimination, and whether getting to know older people better (intergenerational contact) can change attitudes. ACE hopes that the forthcoming Equality Bill and the Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR) will be able to tackle the practical consequences of ageism. A comprehensive report on the findings of the Ageism Survey is being prepared. (RH). |
