AnnotationThe Volunteering Initiative in the Third Age (VITA) is a project funded variously by the Home Office and the Cabinet Office, and co-ordinated by the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS). The project - which ran from November 2004 until November 2006 - was established to champion volunteering by older people. This summary outlines findings on measuring the impact of older volunteers, their involvement by field of activity, the benefits of and barriers to participation, and what motivates older people to volunteer. It suggests future areas for research: awareness raising, the physical and mental health benefits of volunteering, and participation across the generations. (RH).
