AnnotationYoung people face a variety of barriers to saving for retirement, from the strong sense of wanting to "live for today", to the competing demands on their income and poor understanding of the available pension options. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) commissioned Ipsos MORI's Social Research Institute to undertake a qualitative research project examining the attitudes of young people (aged 16 to 29) to saving, retirement planning and pensions. The research sought to inform ways of encouraging and enabling young people to begin saving, particularly for retirement. This report documents the findings, the main topics being: money management strategies and financial priorities; attitudes to saving; triggers and barriers to saving; perceptions of retirement and pensions; triggers and barriers to saving in a pension; and reactions to personal accounts and automatic enrolment into a pension scheme being introduced in 2012. Appendices comprise the methodology and materials used in the discussion sessions. (RH).
