AnnotationAlcohol misuse within the older population has received increasing attention in recent years. Due to population increases within this cohort, together with recent government guidelines, this issue has become an important issue in healthcare provision for older people. This study explores health care professionals' knowledge and practices with respect to older people's alcohol use and misuse. Three specific areas are considered: the extent to which staff perceive alcohol misuse to be an issue; specialist knowledge and training; and clinical practice. A survey of all health care professionals working in an integrated older people's service was undertaken. The results showed that the issue was not routinely addressed as part of the assessment process, and thus its incidence was probably being under-reported. Staff also reported limited knowledge and training experience, and most felt that the profile of alcohol misuse should be raised within the service. These results have implications for service development at both a service and clinical level. (RH).
