Annotation | The use of complementary therapies for treatment of agitation has gained popularity, and aromatherapy is the fastest growing one. In this cross-over randomised trial of 70 older Hong Kong Chinese with dementia, half were randomised to the active group (lavender inhalation) for three weeks and then switched to the control group (sunflower inhalation) for another three weeks; the other half did the opposite. Clinical response was evaluated using the Chinese versions of the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CCMAI) and Neuropsychiatric Inventory. The mean CCMIA total scores decreased from 34.68 to 17.77. The CNPI scores changed from 63.17 to 58.77 after receiving the lavender treatment. No period or sequential effects were noted. Lavender is thus effective as an adjunct therapy i alleviating agitated behaviours in Chinese patients with dementia. In a patient population particularly vulnerable to the side effects of psychotropic medications, aromatherapy using lavender may offer an alternative option. (RH). |
