Annotation | National Health Service (NHS) expenditures in England and Wales were examined for 1985 to 1987 and 1996 to 1997. The analysis described highlights the necessity of including proximity to death (i.e. changes in life expectancy) as well as age, when determining the impact of demographic changes on future health expenditure. The model presented confirms that most hospital costs occur at the end of life, and that proximity to death is a much stronger predictor of hospital expenditure than age alone. This report also considers whether the assumption of constant age-specific expenditure is tenable, and the relationship between life expectancy and morbidity. The work presented in this monograph was undertaken as part of the author's doctoral research at the University of Oxford. (RH). |
