AnnotationThe authors describe the society background, including the emerging societal needs, solutions and problems, as well as the professional principles which have guided them in developing the first two Israeli academic programmes in gerontology in Beer-Sheva and Haifa. They further discuss the structures and accomplishments of both programmes. While Haifa's programme is flexible, Beer-Sheva's programme is structured and divided into three distinct programmes, of which only one - the research track - is designed and tailored to the student's interest. The two programmes have contributed to increasing interest and research in ageing in Israel, enhancing professional cooperation within the universities and with the international scientific community, opening the labour market for the programmes' graduates, creating fruitful collaborations with community services, and accelerating the improvement of older people's quality of care.
