AnnotationThe South African Policy on Ageing aims to promote and protect the rights of older people within the community, and to keep older people within their communities for as long as possible. This article presents data on statistical and demographic trends. It comments on the social and economic implications of ageing for the family, care services, social security and health care expenditure. The author comments on recommendations adopted at the first African Conference on Ageing held in South Africa in August 2004 on improving older people's quality of life. (RH).
