AnnotationThis article summarises a review of research findings published between 1993 and 2005 regarding the effectiveness of group interventions for reducing burden in informal caregivers of people with dementia. 16 studies were included in the review and organised according to the design and types of evaluation carried out. Each study was summarised and briefly reviewed. Overall, different group interventions produced mixed results on the outcome of burden, making it difficult to form any firm conclusions. A discussion around the overarching methodological considerations of the studies reviewed was provided to aid understanding of the results. Recommendations are made to address the issues discussed and to guide future research. There is some suggestion that groups using theory to guide the content of intervention and outcome measures show potential for decreasing burden and are particular areas requiring further investigation.
