| Annotation | Qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this research on Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Ghanaian and white English working-age people living with long-term ill health. This study was carried out by researchers at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Essex, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Social Action for Health, led by Sarah Salway. They examined why there are links between ill health and poverty, and why the consequences appear to be worse among minority ethnic groups. They used secondary analysis of the the Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2001 to 2005, the Citizenship Survey 2001, and tables from the 2001 Census, coupled with an extended period of fieldwork in the East End of London from April 2004 to February 2006. These findings comment on the consequences of health problems, including: attitudes to ill health; attitudes and access to support; social networks; and ill health and employment. Among the findings in this summary are that overall, carers were more likely than those with long-term ill health to miss out on social participation. (RH). |
