Annotation | As part of its monitoring of poverty and social exclusion (see www.poverty.org.uk), the New Policy Institute has analysed how the rates of income poverty differ between ethnic groups, and the reasons for some of these differences. These findings outline the results of research by Guy Palmer and Peter Kenway, whose full report, "Poverty among ethnic groups: how and why does it differ?" is published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). They used data - notably from Households Below Average Income for 2002/03 to 2004/05 (Department for Work and Pensions, DWP) - to ascertain income poverty rates. Their analysis suggests that differences in age, family type and family work status account for only half of the "excess" income poverty rates suffered by minority ethnic groups compared with white British people. Differences in work rates were ascertained using data from the 2001 Census. (RH). |
