AnnotationAs part of the Evergreen Project in Finland, this study compares the pattern of associations between socio-economic position and physical capacity over 5 years in older people in Jyväskylä (Finland) and Göteborg (Gothenburg, Sweden). 350 people at age 75 participated in the interview and 295 in the clinical examination in Jyväskylä. The corresponding numbers in Göteborg were 368 and 323. At age 80, the numbers in Jyväskylä were 234 and 191, while in Göteborg they were 226 and 212. In the two populations, higher education was related to better walking speed, even after adjusting for chronic diseases and physical activity. In addition, in Jyväskylä, higher occupational status was related to better walking speed and vital capacity, and better self-perceived financial situation was related to better vital capacity. Among the domains of physical capacity, socio-economic position is more systematically related to walking speed than other domains, and differences exist between populations in the associations between socio-economic position and physical capacity.
