Annotation | Recent advances in neuroscience suggest that the human brain has a remarkable capacity for plasticity; but does it have the capacity for repair and/or regeneration? On the basis of controversial evidence, the authors speculate that the answer may be 'yes', and suggest that clinicians should therefore approach cognitive impairment and dementia with a new cautious optimism.
