Annotation | Although there has been a continuous increase in the number of older people aged 65+ in Bulgaria and the proportion of those aged 65+ has exceeded that for those under working age, the proportion of those of working age has increased from 55.56% in 1990 to 62.4% in 2005. This article comments on these trends, and considers the societal implications of ageing for the family and for care services. It suggests that if older people's quality of life is to be improved, policies for active ageing and a strengthened social security system are required. (RH). |
