Annotation | The IASSW and the IFSW bring together in this publication the three foundation documents for social work across the world: the Definition of Social Work; Ethics of Social Work - Statement of Principles; and the Global Qualifying Standards for Social Work Education. It is considered that the Definition of Social Work is the single most important document, since it sets out the role and function of social work and applies across the globe. First defined at an international level in 1982, a joint working party constituted with member of IASSW and IFSW worked to revise the definition. The joint IASSW and IFSW Definition of Social Work was formally adopted by both organisations in May 2001. Revised and endorsed by IASSW and IFSW in 2004, the Ethics of Social Work - Statement of Principles forms the basis for global ethical standards of practice. It is incorporated into national statements and codes of ethics around the world and is an essential element in social work education and training. In 2004, Global Qualifying Standards for Social Work Education was endorsed by both organisations and, for the first time, establishes international benchmarks for social work education and training.
