Annotation | Although the intentions behind civic engagement in the US are well-meaning, the author conveys an unease with the concept, which she describes as "voluntarism on a rarified scale". There is concern about its effects on older women, many of whom live in circumstances which are far from ideal. For older people generally, something is owed, and their needs may not be met. (RH). |
