Annotation | The intersections of technology with ageing are explored by experts in gerotechnology and gerontechnology. The book is arranged in five sections, the first being on basic aspects of gerotechnology, that is, technology in older people's everyday lives: perceptual aspects, designing technology based on cognitive ageing principles, and social science approaches. Section B, "Computers, older adults and caregivers" considers: why older people do or do not use the internet; the World Wide Web's increasing ability to provide access to reliable information; and the use of computer-mediated communication for family caregivers' support groups. Section C looks at aspects of assistive technology (AT) in the home and environment: as tools for everyday living and community participation, helping with safety and well-being, or facilitating health and independent living. Section D, "Models, prototypes and specific applications of gerotechnology" includes not only driving simulation, but also introduces the application of human factors and ergonomics research in the aviation industry to health care systems. The Dr Tong Louie Living Laboratory in Vancouver is presented as an example of the organisation of a research and development facility for AT. Older people's participation in developing AT devices is also discussed. Section E, "Cautions, integration and synthesis", considers future ethical concerns. (RH) |
