Annotation | When an organisation becomes the centre of media attention because of alleged or actual malpractice, this can profoundly affect staff morale and the overall culture of the organisation. The author's hospital trust (Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust) has recovered from such an episode. She explains how some very useful lessons have been learned to turn the experience into successful and positive outcomes for patients, by involving the Trust's older people's experience group and other local voluntary groups. The main focus is on developing the roles and responsibilities of older people's champions (a staff nurse and a healthcare assistant from each ward and department). Responsibilities include: engaging with older people; challenging ageist attitudes; and ensuring privacy and dignity. However, all staff are also expected to promote high standards of care for older people. (RH). |
