AnnotationA significantly higher proportion of tribal older people in India are undernourished compared with their rural counterparts. This paper assesses the diet and nutritional status of tribal older people (aged 60+) using data from a cross-sectional study carried out by India's National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) in Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) villages of 9 provincial States in India during 1998-1999. A total of 1239 older people completed the diet survey (24-hour recall) and 3932 older people completed anthropometric measures. In general, the mean consumption of all foods and the median intake of all nutrients were below the Recommended Dietary Intakes (RDI) in both men and women. Mean heights and weights significantly decreased with increase in age in both men and women. The prevalence of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED = Body Mass Index < 18.5) was relatively higher (65.4%) in females compared to their male counterparts (61.8%). The prevalence of CED was significantly higher among those living in kutcha and landless households. Tribal older people are subsisting on inadequate diets, which are reflected in the poor intakes of all nutrients and higher prevalence of undernutrition. (RH).
