AnnotationPeople with no qualifications have low employment rates when compared with the working age population as a whole. In February 2006, BMRB was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to conduct a quantitative study to identify employers' practices and preferences in filling low-skilled vacancies, specifically: the methods used in recruiting for low-skilled jobs, and the key characteristics that employers look for when recruiting. The survey covers the 30% of the employer population in the UK who had recruited (or tried to recruit) for low-skilled vacancies in the previous 12 months. A total of 3,682 interviews were carried out by telephone, with a response rate of 66%. This report presents findings on vacancy details, recruitment and selection methods, skills, over-qualified applicants, and training. Section 2.2 of the report indicates that employers were less likely to recruit people aged 50+, with the exception of the education, health and social care sectors who were more likely to recruit people aged 50+ than the under 25s.
