AnnotationDoes work in later life constitute a threat or an opportunity, for workers themselves, for employers, and for society as a whole? What does it mean for our expectations of retirement and life planning? By examining the factors that influence work in later life, including their policy contexts, this article suggests ways in which existing perceptions about threats and opportunities might change. The article makes comparisons between the UK and New Zealand, to explore how differing policy contexts (such as a lack of compulsory retirement) affects how these issues are seen and responded to. This is an abridged article for ReView with permission from the authors. The full version appeared in Social Policy Journal of New Zealand (March 2006, pp 20-37). (RH).
