AnnotationThe quality of health and social care service has become an increasing focus of political, policy and public debate. This UK-wide study by Peter Beresford, Lesley Adshead and Suzy Croft focused on service users' experience of specialist palliative care social work. Two groups use this service: people living with life-limiting illnesses and conditions, and those facing bereavement. 111 service users were interviewed for this participatory project, which explored their views of specialist palliative care social work practice as a basis for improving their involvement in its organisations, training, evaluation and review. While service users had negative views of social work and social workers prior to meeting the specialist palliative care social worker, they found many positive aspects and appreciated the wide range of support offered. The authors' full report, 'Palliative care, social work and service users: making life possible', is published by Jessica Kingsley. (RH).
