AnnotationAnomalies between localities in the funding of care in old age are a source of much confusion. This briefing reports on a survey for Help the Aged, in which 942 people aged 45-65 were asked whether they have planned ahead, and how the cost of their care needs might be met in future. Since 62% of the sample had not made any plans for their future care needs, and almost half expect the state to pay, a gap between hope and reality is indicated. Some point of guidance on ways in which people can save for care are offered. Help the Aged seeks some key changes from government, including: an end to means-testing; an increase in the upper savings limits; a single national assessment process to decide who should receive fully funded NHS care; and clearer information for taxpayers on what the state will and will not provide in older age.
