Annotation | Women are smoking in increasing numbers both in the developed and the developing world, thus placing themselves at risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD now affects 13% of women over the age of 65. Despite the high mortality rate for this disease, women do not find the prospect of this condition of major concern. The author reviews the vital statistics, diagnosis and management of COPD in the older woman. COPD treatments outlined in this article are smoking cessation, drug therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation. (RH). |
