Annotation | How can we respond in a helpful and respectful way when a person with dementia seems to be occupying a different reality from our own? The author offers some options based on her experience, and her Fancy Footwork approach previously described in Journal of Dementia Care (vol 12, no 6, 2004). She also deals with questions raised about lying to people with dementia in the previous issue of Journal of Dementia Care. She refers to Tom Kitwood's "Discover the person, not the disease" (Journal of Dementia Care, 1993), who suggested a range of factors to be considered in developing suitable strategies. (RH). |
