AnnotationChina has a culture of family support for older people. Although older people may not live with their adult children, the usual form of family support in China is maintaining reciprocal relations with them. The author uses principles of Social Exchange Theory to analyse data on economic contact, housework assistance and emotional contact with children from a survey of older people's basic needs in towns in Zhejiang province. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, the author concludes, first, that more older people received economic assistance from their children than did children from their parents. Second, most older people do housework by themselves; of other relatives, its was daughters who did more housework for parents. Lastly, the majority of older people have communicated emotionally with their children. The author suggests developing community services for older people: support services, health and medical services, leisure activities, education, and a social development service, in order to protect the rights of older people. Community centres can administer community services. (RH).
